~CITY COUNCIL LOOKS AT EASING ONLINE VOTER REGISTRATION: In the wake of the abysmally low turnout in the Nov. 7 mayoral election, the City Council is poised to approve a bill to make it easier for first-time voters to register online. A leading progressive Democratic club in Brooklyn is among many political organizations coming out in favor of the bill. Brandon West, vice president for policy for the New Kings Democrats, praised the legislation proposed by Councilmember Ben Kallos (D-Upper East Side) to mandate the New York City Campaign Finance Board to create a secure website and mobile app for residents who want to register to vote online. “This long overdue reform is a great first step to making it finally easier to participate in our democracy,” West said. “New York should be leading the pack on having an innovative and inclusive civic space, instead we lag far behind. Hopefully we can reverse this trend in low turnout and do so quickly.” Less than 25 percent of the city’s eligible voters showed up at the polls on Nov. 7, according to various media reports. (via Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
 
~BROOKLYN BOASTS WORLD’S FIRST COMMERCIAL ROOFTOP VINEYARD: A soon-to-be $1,000 bottle of wine grown on a Brooklyn roof will tell the historical tale of a New York entrepreneur determined to put Brooklyn on the map for its wine. Devin Shomaker took his desire to grow wine in Brooklyn and created the world’s first commercial rooftop vineyard in the borough, with hundreds of thousands of dollars of investment support. “There is a whole mysticism around wine culture, but how many people know what vines need to grow and prosper? Viticulture management comes down to science, and that is what we are proving out on the rooftop,” Shomaker said. Shomaker’s company, Rooftop Reds, secured a permanent 14,800-square-foot rooftop space at the Brooklyn Navy Yard with 42 planters after he was able to raise $16,820 on Kickstarter. While the pricey bottles are waiting until 2019 to mature, curious wine-lovers can check out the rooftop’s tasting room that features New York State regional wine. (via CNBC)
 
~FROM UNDERAGE DRINKING TO MULTIMILLION DOLLAR CONDOS: Red Hook recently bested DUMBO as the priciest neighborhood in Brooklyn, in part because of the multimillion dollar development at 160 Imlay St., but the once-abandoned industrial warehouse used to be a prime spot for late-night parties. A frequenter of the spot in the early 2000s shared memories of sneaking into “The Warehouse” to play drinking games, tag the walls, chuck beer cans at nearby trucks and just have a good time. As many as 50 people would go on the roof through a labyrinth of barbed wire and “booby-trapped” stairs with wood planks. “Once, my friend fell off what is now being advertised as the ‘Super Penthouse.’ He shattered his humerus but came back the next week to paint his name on a crucifix-shaped wall-panel,” Hannah Frishbergwrote. With much of the new apartments in the complex sold, Frishberg’s photos have cemented the spot’s legacy in history. (via Brokelyn)
 
~CHILD’S PLAY: USING SHAKESPEARE TO HELP KIDS GET IN TOUCH WITH THEIR EMOTIONS: A theater ensemble is using the works of the Great Bard to help kids get in touch with their feelings. Shakespeare’s plays portray emotions ranging from rage to love and from grief to joy. Using this great art as a springboard, Child’s Play NY has put together workshops built around a 45-minute version of the comedy “A Midsummer’s Night Dream,” performed by classically trained actors/teaching artists. The troupe uses the play as a basis for role playing, movement and conversations to help young folks explore theirown emotions. To give the public a chance to sample the work the theater company does in NYC schools, the ensemble will perform a free performance of “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” on Dec. 2 in Brooklyn Heights at St. Francis College. The performance will be followed by a hands-on workshop for kids ages 6-16 and their families. (via Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

 EAGLE SPORTS: The LIU Brooklyn men’s basketball squad lived up to its credo as a “fun team to watch” during the third game of new head coachDerek Kellogg’s tenure at the Downtown Brooklyn school. After back-to-back losses to open the campaign, the Blackbirds (1-2) finally showed off their break-neck, up-and-down style in a victory Wednesday night in front of just over 1,000 fans at the Steinberg Center. Redshirt senior Joel Hernandez led five LIU players in double figures with 19 points and freshman forward Eral Penn ripped down 13 rebounds as the Blackbirds cruised to a 104-68 rout of visiting Division III New Rochelle. “We are going to be fun, and I have a good indication that we are going to win some basketball games,” noted Kellogg before LIU dropped a tough 102-96 decision to Tulsa in New Orleans last Friday night. “And hopefully we can win the right amount at the right time to put ourselves in a good position,” he added. (via Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
