ON THIS DAY IN 1924, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Year in Sing Sing Sentence Given to Chiropractor.”

The article focused on a Brooklyn chiropractor who was convicted of second-degree manslaughter.

“Assistant District Attorney James I. Cuff, who prosecuted him, brought out that on Dec. 13, last, he was called by Andrew Germuth to treat his 5-year-old daughter Caroline. The child was suffering from diphtheria. Instead of ordering complete rest and the scientifically recognized treatment for such an ailment, Meyer manipulated the child’s spine and wiggled her neck, gave no antitoxin or other antidotes and aggravated the diphtheria so that when Dr. Clifton Dance was called in on the night of Dec. 16, it was too late to save Caroline and she died an hour later,” the Eagle reported.
