Greenfield offers $1,000 reward to catch synagogue suspects

Shocked and saddened by the robbery and assault of a caretaker in a Midwood synagogue on Sunday, Councilmember David G. Greenfield announced that same day that he is posting a $1,000 reward to anyone who offers information to police leading to the arrest of the violent suspects.

Greenfield (D-Midwood-Borough Park-Bensonhurst) said in a statement that he was particularly upset by the fact that the robbery at the Chabad Synagogue Beth Menachem Mendel took place during Passover, one of the holiest times of the year on the Jewish calendar.

“As we celebrate Pesach, it is especially disturbing to find out that a shul’s caretaker was assaulted and that the shul was robbed during this important holiday,” Greenfield said, using the Hebrew word for Passover.

Passover, which began on the night of April 10, ended on the evening of April 18.

The robbery took place shortly after 5 a.m. at the synagogue at 1703 Avenue J, according to police, who said two suspects entered the building, hit the 58-year-old male caretaker over the head with a gardening tool, threatened him and demanded his property.

The caretaker suffered from head injuries as a result of the assault, police said.

The suspect took the victim’s money, credit cards, phone and laptop and then fled the scene.

In an interview on 1010 WINS, Greenfield said he was told that the caretaker’s blood was found on the floor of the synagogue.

Greenfield said that anyone with information about the crime can call NYPD’s Crime Stoppers hot line at 1-800-577-TIPS.

“It’s more important, now than ever, that that we unite as a community and find the hateful criminals who did this,” Greenfield stated.
