ON THIS DAY IN 1951, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “M’ Arthur, City Rest From Wild Welcome.”

The article focused on General Douglass McArthur’s visit to the city.

“The general had no plans for this weekend, although his wife and 13-year-old son Arthur were raring to go to the Polo Grounds today to see the Dodgers and the Giants play. It will be young Arthur’s first major league contest,” the Eagle reported.

CHARLOTTE BRONTË WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1816. The English novelist was born into a family of six children headed by strict clergyman father Patrick. Charlotte and her younger siblings lived an isolated existence, during which they imagined and wrote elaborate stories of fantasy. Brontë worked as a governess and teacher but continued writing. Her first novel, published under the name Currer Bell, was “Jane Eyre: An Autobiography” (August 1847). It drew on her life experiences and is considered a cornerstone of British literature. Brontë died in 1855 in England.

MAX WEBER WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1864. Considered one of the founders of modern sociological thought, his historical and comparative studies of the sociocultural processes of great civilizations, notably The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, greatly influenced the field. Weber’s ethical themes are foundational in existentialist philosophical thought. He died in 1920 in Germany.

ANTHONY QUINN WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1915.  The actor, sculptor and painter was born in Mexico and moved to the U.S. as a child. He became a U.S. citizen in 1947. He won Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in 1952 for “Viva Zapata!” and in 1956 for “Lust for Life.” His best-remembered role is that of the title character in “Zorba the Greek,” for which he was nominated for Best Actor in 1964. Quinn died in Massachusetts in 2001.

FRIEDRICH FROEBEL WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1782. The German educator and author believed that play is an important part of a child’s education. He invented the kindergarten, founding the first one in Blankenburg, Germany in 1837. Froebel also invented a series of toys that he intended to stimulate learning. Froebel’s ideas about the role of directed play, toys and music in children’s education had a profound influence in England and the U.S., where the nursery school became a further extension of his ideas. Froebel died in Germany in 1852.
