ON THIS DAY IN 1953, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Has Boro a Heart? Ask Sarge Miller.”

The article focused on an Army sergeant’s quest to find his family a place to live while he is away at war.

“Leonard Wallach, a painter, drove to the hotel last night and had taken the Millers to his Manhattan Beach home at 189 Mackenzie St. and offered them the second floor of the private house,” the Eagle reported.

ROBERT PENN WARREN WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1905. The American poet, novelist, essayist and critic was the country’s first official poet laureate. Warren was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his novel “All the King’s Men” (1947), as well as for his poetry in 1958 and 1979. He died of cancer in 1989 in Vermont.

TODAY IS THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE CREATION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS. In 1800, Congress approved an act providing “for the purchase of such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress . . . and for fitting up a suitable apartment for containing them.” It is considered by many to be one of the world’s greatest libraries.

EDMUND CARTWRIGHT WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1743. The English cleric and inventor was known for developing the power loom and other weaving inventions He died in England in 1823.

THE BROOKLYN HISTORICAL SOCIETY (BHS) WILL HOST “A Conversation with Julie Scelfo and Debora Spar” tonight at 6:30 p.m. Attendees will hear from two women who have literally written the book on women’s ongoing fight for equality and recognition in a landscape of contradictory expectations. Spar is the new president of Lincoln Center, former Barnard College president and the author of “Wonder Women: Sex, Power and the Quest for Perfection.” Scelfo returns to BHS with “The Women Who Made New York,” her work which chronicles dozens of untold stories of women who made New York City the cultural hub we know it as today.
