ON THIS DAY IN 1942, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “1-Way Streets Seen Wasting Gas and Oil.”
The article focused on a plan to eliminate certain one-way streets in Brooklyn in order to save delivery companies money on gas.
“One preliminary study of a company which uses 37 trucks and cars showed that five miles could be saved daily while transporting vehicles from the plant to the garage if the one-way system were changed,” the Eagle reported.

LUDWIG WITTGENSTEIN WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1889. Considered one of the most influential analytic and linguistic philosophers of the 20th century, he had a fundamental influence on logical positivism, linguistic analysis and semantics. He theorized that philosophical problems were fundamentally problems of language, and studying “ordinary language” would enable one to solve many of these problems. Wittgenstein died in 1951 in England.
TODAY IS NATIONAL PRETZEL DAY. It was proclaimed nationally in 1983 and then later proclaimed by Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell in 2003. The hard pretzel is thought to have originated in the U.S. in 1850 in Lititz, Pennsylvania, with baker Julius Sturgis.
ANITA LOOS WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1893. The American author and playwright is best-remembered for her book “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” which was published in 1925. Loos died in New York in 1981.
TODAY IS THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE GUERNICA MASSACRE. In 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, the ancient Spanish town was attacked without warning by German-made airplanes. Three hours of intensive bombing left the town in flames, and citizens who fled to the fields and ditches around Guernica were machine-gunned from the air. This atrocity inspired Pablo Picasso’s mural “Guernica.” Responsibility for the bombing was never officially established, but the suffering and anger of the victims and their survivors are still evident at anniversary demonstrations.
BERNARD MALAMUD WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1914. The Brooklyn-born Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist was also a two-time recipient of the National Book Award. Malamud’s works include “The Natural” (1952) and “The Fixer” (1966). He died in 1986 in New York.

New York City’s most populous borough, Brooklyn, is home to nearly 2.6 million residents. If Brooklyn were an independent city it would be the fourth largest city in the United States. While Brooklyn has become the epitome of ‘cool and hip’ in recent years, for those that were born here, raised families here and improved communities over the years, Brooklyn has never been ‘uncool’.
