ON THIS DAY IN 1950, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Ex-Chief of Yankee Ticket Sales Free on Bail in $43,687 Theft.”

The article focused on a former Yankees ticket office manager who stole thousands of dollars from the team.

“According to the prosecutor, Sherwin got into trouble in 1948, when he was $31,821 short in his books and conceived the idea of making a deal with ticket agencies to set aside choice World Series ducats for cash in advance. The trouble with the idea was that the Yankees didn’t get into the series that year,” the Eagle reported.
