A retired U.S. Marine and a Korean War veteran will both proudly lead the way as hundreds of veterans and supporters of the military march up Third Avenue in Bay Ridge for the 150th Kings County Memorial Day Parade.

Lt. Gen. John A. Toolan and Korean War veteran Prisco De Angelis are the two grand marshals of the parade, which will take place on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, starting at 11 a.m.

The deputy grand marshals are Councilmember Vincent Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) and two World War II veterans, Roy and Jack Vanasco.

Sponsored by the United Military Veterans of Kings County, the Brooklyn Memorial Day parade is one of the oldest Memorial Day parades in the country.

Here is the parade route:

The starting point is Third Avenue and 78th Street. The marchers will proceed along Third Avenue to Marine Ave. and then go up to Fourth Ave. and along Fourth Avenue to John Paul Jones Park on 101st Street, where a post-parade memorial service will take place.

All of the marchers will enter the park in formation to pass in review by the grandstand.

The big day will feature several special guests, including the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard, the West Point band, tenor Danny Rodriguez, the Veterans Corps of Artillery and the marching band from Henry Ford II High School in Sterling, Michigan.

In a statement posted on the website of the United Military Veterans of Kings County, the parade organizers define their theme as one of paying tribute to those who died fighting our nation’s wars.

“To educate a diverse audience that includes veteran groups, civic organizations, business leaders, educational institutions and the general public on the importance of Memorial Day. The United Military Veterans of Kings County will schedule, plan and execute an
annual parade on Memorial Day to include a memorial service to honor and remember those who lost their lives in the defense of our nation. Throughout the year, the United Military Veterans of Kings County will promote the significant impact and contributions all veterans have made throughout our nation’s history,” the mission statement reads.
