The Brooklyn Republican Party under the leadership of Executive Committee Chairman Ted Ghorra and Vice Chairman Brian Doherty has endorsed Christine Parker in her run for the District 35 City Council seat. Parker is the only Republican running against Democratic incumbent Laurie Cumbo. Other candidates in the race include Democrats Ede Fox and Greg Schwartz, and Green Party candidate Jabarai Brisport. District 35 includes Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights and parts of Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Parker, a graduate of St. John’s University, lives in the borough and was the former Deputy Director of Advancement for the Cultural Museum of African Art. Prior to this, Christine was a business partner with a billion-dollar financial service firm located in New York City, specializing in business growth development, human resource management training and community development.  Parker has also worked at NYC Public Advocate’s office focusing on the concerns of New York’s City foster care system.

The divorced mother of two college students says her hope is to build powerful and dynamic movements in diverse communities to create meaningful change through arts and education.  Her goal is for the expansion of educational opportunities through school choice. “Choice,” Parker said, “should include opportunities for school vouchers in religious studies, charter schools and private schools.”

Parker also hopes to address issues relating to vocational training, youth and career development, job creation and affordable housing.

Parker told the Brooklyn Eagle, “I am honored to enter this race to provide a voice to the voiceless. Those forgotten by society, those who don’t have access to supportive services, or the halls of power. Those who are disenfranchised, disillusioned and disheartened by dialogue without action or solutions to issues that plague our community.”

“The Brooklyn Republican Party, along with its Executive Committee, is thrilled to endorse Christine Parker,” said Ghorra.  “Simply stated, a change on so many fronts is needed, and we look forward to supporting her in what is sure to be an exciting race. We all know things must change and we need to look in a different direction than what has led us here in the first place.  Christine is determined to make a positive difference in her community and she is the right person at the right time.”

“As a former Democrat, I’ve had the privilege of supporting the Kings County Chairman Frank Seddio,” said Parker. “However, my decision to run as a Republican is not based on party ideology.

“I am willing to fight diligently so that others who are afraid to fight won’t have to worry about jobs, education or a roof over their heads,” Parker said. “I’m willing to fight for a hopeful future for residents in the community. That’s why I’m willing to do this because it matters.

“Despite my party affiliation, I have deeply held beliefs that we all share a certain hope for our future. I want to take my passion and determination in a new direction. Let’s level the political landscape by providing a balance perspective. I’m fighting for that!”
