Children in Sunset Park were introduced to the wonderful world of books, thanks to the Brooklyn Book Festival, which hosted a celebration of literature at P.S. 24 complete with readings, play acting, lessons in how to create a comic book and other fun-filled activities.

Sponsored by Councilmember Carlos Menchaca (D-Sunset Park-Red Hook), the festival, called a Community Book Fair, also gave kids a chance to take part in yoga classes and learn how to make origami figures.

The all-day event, which had plenty of activities for adults as well as kids, took place inside the P.S. 24 building at 427 38th St.

A highlight of the day was the visit from several famous authors, who came to the book fair to share their love of reading and writing and to pass on some tricks of the trade.

During the school day, children got to meet several of their favorite writers, including Brian Floca, the 2014 winner of the coveted Caldecott Medal for children’s literature and the author of “Locomotive”; Jason Fry, author of more than 30 books set in the “Star Wars” galaxy; George O’Connor, author and illustrator of the â€śOlympians,” a popular series of graphic novels about Greek mythology; and Jorge Aguirre, who wrote “Dragons Beware.”

The Community Book Fair continued into the evening, which an appearance by author-illustrator RaĂşl ColĂłn who wrote “Portraits of Hispanic American Heroes,” and a draw-off contest with writers Kat Fajardo (“Gringa”), Matt Loux (“The Time Museum” series), John Patrick Green (“Hippopotamister”) and Isabel Roxas (“Let Me Finish”).

“Books entertain, educate and broaden horizons,” Menchaca said explaining his reason for supporting the Community Book Fair.

The Brooklyn Book Festival, which organized the P.S. 24 fair, sponsors a major book fair every September. It is the largest book festival in New York City.
