A group of Brooklyn pols is demanding two criminals turn themselves in. MTA has a special vacuum for cleaning the tracks, and Greenland is getting greener, but it’s not a good thing. ~BROOKLYN DA RACE GETS FIERY: Things got heated when five of the district attorney candidates got together last week for a town hall. The candidates clashed on issues like bail reform, “broken windows” policing and the trial of Akai Gurley, who was shot to death by rookie cop Peter Liang. Gurley’s aunt, Hertencia Petersen called out acting DA Eric Gonzalez for not being transparent with families of victims. A reactionary Gonzalez was cut off by the audience when he tried to respond. Candidate Patricia Gatling could not attend the event, but her headquarters saw some action when three employees left work in handcuffs. The three girls were paid to hand out flyers, but they instead ended up in a brawl that was so loud neighbors called the cops. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and New York Post)
 
~CARTOONS IN THE COURTHOUSE: The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York hosted a gallery opening last week for famousNew Yorker magazine cartoonist Bob Mankoff. “The World of Bob Mankoff: A Cartoon Retrospective” will be at the Charles P. Sifton Gallery until Oct. 20. “For this exhibit, we have gathered many of the most famous cartoons of Bob Mankoff, which were published over a long career,” said Chief Judge Dora Irizarry. “Some of his cartoons touch on the law and issues of justice, and all are just as timely today as when they were first published.” Magistrate Judge Robert M. Levy introduced Mankoff at the event, saying that Mondays always held a special place in his heart because it was the day The New Yorkercame out. “I would race my wife to read The New Yorker so that I could read the cartoons before anyone in my family saw,” Levy said. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
 
~DO WHAT’S RIGHT: “Turn yourself in,” Brooklyn pols urged two cowardly hit-and-run drivers on Tuesday. In a somber gathering in Greenpoint at the site of one of last weekend’s deadly two crashes, Councilmembers Ydanis Rodriguez, Stephen Levin and Mark Treyger called for the drivers to turn themselves in — before the police get to them. “There’s no doubt in my mind that we will be able to see video evidence that will show what company it was and some ID on that truck,” Levin said of the private garbage truck suspected of hitting the “gentle and innocent” 27-year old Neftaly Ramirez in Greenpoint. In Gravesend, 18-year old Alejandro Tello was killed as he rode across the street on his skateboard. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and Gothamist)
 
~OH, HOW THE TIMES HAVE CHANGED: The Brooklyn of today just isn’t the Brooklyn of seven years ago. A group from MIT’s Media Lab used Google Streetview to analyze the borough’s physical changes, and they’ve been drastic. Of the sample cities, which included Baltimore, Boston, Washington and Detroit, Brooklyn showed the most change from 2007 to 2014. A before and after set of pictures on Union Avenue in Williamsburg show a street surrounded by construction sites with an open sky. Flash forward seven years and the sky is covered with multiple luxury buildings filled with condos. The change is coming fastest in neighborhoods like Williamsburg, Midwood andCanarsie. But for those clinging to the past, areas like Bushwick, East Williamsburg and Dyker Heights have held more true to their old images.(via Brownstoner)
 
~NOW, THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT: It wasn’t all that long ago that the New York Cosmos’ season, let alone existence, was in jeopardy. With no stadium to play in, no jersey sponsor and no tickets sold, Pele’s former team looked destined for an early grave. But in swooped Rocco Commisso, CEO ofMediacom, to save the struggling NASL franchise. “Rarely do sports teams make money,” said Commisso. “In the case of the Cosmos, it’s even worse.” But after a third-place finish in the Spring Season and a stunning 2-0 victoryon Saturday against legendary La Liga side Valencia, things are looking upfor the boys in green. “I think the guys did very well,” Cosmos head coachGiovanni Savarese said after the win. “It’s a great result for them to now be confident against Miami.” New York will now turns its sights towards the fall season, which starts on Saturday at MCU Park against Miami FC. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

 EAGLE SPORTS: With proven defenseman Travis Hamonic moving from Downtown Brooklyn to Calgary, the New York Islanders are hoping their youth movement can help fill the void left by the veteran blue liner. Young defenseman Adam Pelech figures to log many more minutes on the ice than he did during his rookie campaign next season, especially after general manager Garth Snow inked him to a four-year contract worth a reported $6.4 million on Monday. Pelech, 22, appeared in 44 games with the Islanders last year, scoring three goals and picking up seven assists. ”Adam has proven at a very young age that he’s capable of playing an important defensive role on our team,” Snow said. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
