THE LEDE: Happy Thursday, Brooklyn! As Sen. Daniel Squadron announces his leave, we look back at what he’s done for Brooklyn. The Nets are going to Mexico, and more condos are coming to the borough (shock). Plus, David Letterman returns, Shake Shack has lobster burgers, and the majority of Americans don’t know where North Korea is on a map. Finally, “42” is being shown tonight at Movies with a View in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

IMPRINT: Brad Pitt tours America’s national parks on three different covers for GQ Style’s summer edition.

The Rundown

~SAYONARA SQUADRON: In a surprise announcement, state Sen. Daniel Squadron said on Wednesday that he will be resigning from the state Senatethis Friday. “Like many across the country, since November, I’ve thought a lot about how best to change the direction of our country, and stand up for core values that are under threat,” Squadron said. “After much reflection, I have decided to lend my hand to make a difference in states across the country, pushing policies and candidates that will create a fairer and more democratic future.” The timing of his decision means the 26th District Senate seat will be filled in this November’s election. Squadron has been a strong voice for the borough, fighting for Brooklyn Bridge Park and Bushwick Inlet Park, public schools, public housing and storm resiliency, while also responding to constituent requests like getting tour buses off the narrow streets of Cobble Hill(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~A SECOND CHANCE FOR BROOKLYNITES: Brooklyn’s Acting DA Eric Gonzalez stood alongside City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Public Advocate Letitia James as he asked a judge to vacate 143,532 old,low-level summons warrants that were issued 10 or more years ago during a special session of the court in Downtown Brooklyn on Wednesday. “Many of these cases are 10, 15 or 20 years old,” said Gonzalez. “They stem from low-level activity, for example someone riding a bike on a sidewalk or being in a park after dark. The people who received these tickets, for various reasons, couldn’t pay — some people couldn’t afford to miss work to pay the ticket, couldn’t afford to pay the fine or they had childcare issues.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~MORE CONDOS ON THE WAY: Developers submitted plans for 723 condo units in Brooklyn, the highest amount in two years. Of the 723, 555 units have been accepted by the borough, including the $50.2 million, 71-unit Bedford Avenue Condominium in Flatbush and the $143.6 million 95-unit condominium in Greenpoint. The submissions show a steady increase in planned units since a large drop-off from a 2,008-unit peak in 2007. The condo demand in Brooklyn is high, making it difficult for developers to keep up, but for a normal Brooklynite, residential high-rises seem to be coming faster than the subway in the morning. (via The Real Deal)

~MEXICO IS NETS’ NEW HOME AWAY FROM HOME: ¡Hola Brooklyn! That could be the Nets’ new motto as they head to Mexico City this winter to host a pair of regular-season NBA games against the Oklahoma City Thunder onDec. 7 and the Miami Heat on Dec. 9. Though the Barclays Center has been the team’s home since the 2012-13 campaign, the new-look Nets, who are in rebuild mode under the guidance of general manager Sean Marks and head coach Kenny Atkinson, are looking forward to expanding their brand on a global scale. “What we are trying to build here with the Nets is a diverse culture, whether it’s with our staff or our players,” Atkinson said. “To be able to get out of our comfort zone, and experience a new culture, is going to help us improve as a team and as an organization.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~SLAVE GRAVES MAY HALT NEW PRE-K SCHOOL: The possibility ofburied slaves may further complicate the plans to build a new pre-K school inGowanus. The diary of Adriance Van Brunt surfaced and detailed the possibility of slave remains near 201 Ninth St. where the school was expected to be built. Although no remains have been found, the state requested that more research be done before construction. With the neighborhood likely scattered with fallen Revolutionary War soldiers, some think the city didn’t dig deep enough to find the remains. Historians also believe the Staples on 348 Fourth Ave. could be positioned over a burial site. “At a certain point, it becomes so powerful an issue that government agencies will say, ‘You know, there’s too much going on here,’” said historian, Bob Furman. “And that could happen here. We’ll have to wait and see.” (via DNAinfo)

EAGLE SPORTS: Calvin de Haan has had a full week to relish the fact that he will be back in Orange and Blue next season. However, he’s spent much longer lamenting what could have been in 2016-17. “It was kind of gut-wrenching to go 6-0 in our last six games and not make the playoffs, but we can try to carry that onto the next season and go from there,” the newly re-signed Islanders defenseman said shortly after inking a one-year deal to remain with New York and avoid salary arbitration. “Obviously, the ultimate goal is to win the Stanley Cup, and I’m looking forward to the season.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
