THE LEDE: Welcome to the new week, Brooklyn! After Charlottesville, Brooklyn pols are demanding we dig deeper into Gowanus’ possible slave graveyard. The solar eclipse may affect President Trump in a weird way, a columnist in support of neo-Nazis gets eviscerated by assemblymemberSteven Cymbrowitz, and Woody Allen returns to Coney Island for his new film. Plus, senior citizens get frisky in Brownsville, the Subway Series has lost its lust, and we present you with the worst editing error in journalism history. Have a great week.

~ARE SLAVES BURIED UNDER GOWANUS?: Sen. Jesse Hamilton, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams are calling for an independent archaeological/architectural investigation at an empty lot in Gowanus that may be a former slave burial ground. Given the recent violent events in Charlottesville, officials say there has never been a more fitting time to confront America’s controversial past. “In the wake of the national outcry over Confederate monuments, our city must come to grips with its own slave-owning history,” Hamilton said. “Charlottesville only underscores our obligation to uncover New York’s history. In Charlottesville, we have white supremacists and neo-Nazis seeking to preserve Confederate monuments, many built as a signal reaffirming oppression and denial of rights to African Americans.” Preservationists also believe that 256 members of the Maryland 400 were buried in the lot. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~BROOKLYN DAILY STIRS CONTROVERSY WITH OP-ED: “Don’t be so hard on the neo-Nazis.” That was the headline of a recent Brooklyn Daily op-ed that made it known the author was not okay with removing confederate statues. The article has since been renamed to “Stop whining about statues!,” but the content underneath the headline remained untouched fromJoanna DelBuono’s original opinions. In the text, DelBuono calls Malcolm X a “thug who incited violence,” and she puts blame on Barack Obama for the current violence and divisiveness in the United States. Assemblyember Steven Cymbrowitz, who represents parts of South Brooklyn, fired back by addressing the paper on Facebook, saying, “I never thought I’d see the day when Nazis and racism would be not simply condoned, but applauded in your pages,” he said. “For your columnist to assign responsibility for the Charlottesville violence to anyone except the white supremacists holding swastikas and other anti-Semitic placards is nothing less than repugnant.” (via Brooklyn Daily and Brokelyn)

~WOODY RETURNS TO CONEY: Woody Allen has returned to Coney Island for his latest film, “Wonder Wheel.” His 1977 success “Annie Hall,” starring Diane Keaton and Allen, was filled with scenes filmed around the first Thunderbolt roller coaster in Coney Island. Then he revisited Coney in 1987 for scenes in “Radio Days.” In this latest annual, a possible Oscar contender, he restricts himself to director and writer. Filmed on location, the cameras started principal photography in September 2016 and then settled in for nine days at Deno’s Wonder Wheel in October 2016. Woody’s crew had full access to the park owned by brothers Dennis and Steve Voudouris and their families. Rumors are afloat that a Cyclone scene was shot for the upcoming film and that even the Parachute Jump has been reborn for this production. Reports claim that some scenes were set in other Brooklyn neighborhoods likeBrighton Beach and Vinegar Hill(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~PLAN TO CONVERT BROOKLYN VA HOSPITAL RAISES ALARM: A plan to eliminate inpatient surgery at Brooklyn’s VA hospital and transfer these services to the Manhattan VA hospital is raising alarm among Brooklyn and Staten Island military veterans and local officials, who say they are worried the move will cause a hardship for veterans in the outer boroughs. Under the proposal, the hospital in Bay Ridge would become an advanced ambulatory facility. A spokesman for the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System told us that the proposal was not a cutback, but rather an enhancement which would improve the quality and outcomes of complex surgery in Manhattan and access to ambulatory surgery in Brooklyn. Travel needs “will be addressed” for patients having trouble making the one-to-two-hour trek to Manhattan, the VA said.(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~SENIOR CITIZEN SEX ED: The age for sexual education went way up when Public Advocate Letitia James brought sex ed to a group of older adults. Research shows that people are staying sexually active longer and the rate of older adults with HIV is increasing. To combat this, James handed out literature and male and female condoms to a crowd of 40 people at the Tilden Senior Center in Brownsville, an area of the city that has the largest number of newly infected people with HIV. James says 50 percent of people with HIV and AIDS are now 50 years or older. Assemblywoman Latrice Walker also joined the seminar. “Just like we’re doing sex education in schools, sex education of our younger adults, we felt like it was important for us to do sex education for our older adults, as well,” Walker said. (via the Daily News)
