THE LEDE: Happy hump day, Brooklyn! Despite efforts from preservationists, Our lady of Loreto is coming down. Like Matt HarveyJeurys Familia will be making a pair of rehab starts for the Brooklyn Cyclones, and human bones were found in East Flatbush. Plus, we have three easy cures for jet lag, and thousands of orange ecstasy pills with Donald Trump’s face on them were seized in Germany. Also, did you know there’s only one openly gay male athlete in the entire world? Finally, despite repeated warnings to use special glasses, The Donald looked directly into the solar eclipse, and he may have damaged his eyes.

~OUR LADY OF LORETO IS GOING DOWN: Day by day, Our Lady of Loreto is disappearing. Workers have started demolishing a historic church in the Ocean Hill section of Brownsville that community activists have been fighting to save. Catholic officials are moving forward with plans to demolish Our Lady of Loreto Church, which was declared eligible for listing on the State and National Registers of Historic Places several years ago. They are doing so despite efforts by the Brownsville Cultural Coalition to have Our Lady of Loreto designated as a city landmark and reused as a cultural center. The Catholic Charities Progress of Peoples Development Corp. is tearing it down in order to build a 40-unit low-income housing facility. Workers have removed a chunk of the triangular-shaped ornamental roof on the front of the building and statues of saints that stood on the church’s facade. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~FAMILIA FACE TO PITCH IN BROOKLYN: Maybe MCU Park should be called the New York Mets’ rehab and recovery unit. For the second time in the past week, one of the parent club’s previously injured All-Star hurlers will use the Brooklyn Cyclones’ sun-splashed facility by the sea to make positive strides on his return to the big leagues. The Cyclones announced that Mets All-Star closer Jeurys Familia would make a pair of relief appearances with the Baby Bums this week. He was scheduled to pitch at least an inning last night against Hudson Valley and again today vs. the Renegades as he tries to throw in back-to-back games for the first time during his long journey back to the Mets. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~HUMAN REMAINS FOUND NEAR BROOKLYN PSYCH HOSPITAL: Just as pols were urging an investigation into whether there’s a slave burial ground under an empty lot in Gowanus, some human remains surfaced in East Flatbush. Even though it’s well-known that Brooklyn lies on the remains of revolutionary soldiers and historic artifacts, some construction workers were still surprised to dig up human bones that haven’t yet been dated. The workers made the gruesome discovery at Clarkson Avenue by East 48th Street near Kingsboro Psychiatric Center. They found a skull, arm and leg bones 13 feet under the dirt. It’s been determined that the bones are from a human, but it’s uncertain for how long they’ve been buried. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and the Daily News)

~TRUMP VILLAGE AFFORDABLE HOUSING WAR HEATS UP: The first property named after the Trump family is rumbling with conflict. The once-affordable luxury apartments were created by Donald Trump’s father Fred with the help of the Mitchell-Lama program. The program that granted Fred Trump financial incentives to build affordable housing has now sent the village and the affordable housing sector into a battle of residency. Since 1990, half of Mitchell-Lama rentals have left the program, as it barred residents from selling their apartments for more than what they paid, even after the values of the apartments raised significantly. Residents in the village are now pitted against each other, showcasing an example of the battles being fought around the city as more affordable housing is converted into modern apartments. (via Crain’s New York Business)

~NO MORE PHONY IDS FROM THE DMV: It’s gotten much harder to obtain a New York State driver’s license under false pretenses since the state upgraded its facial recognition technology 18 months ago, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday. The system is catching an increased numbers of fraudsters attempting to obtain second IDs. Critics worry about privacy issues, however, in the face of expanding and interconnected government databases. Since launching the system at the DMV in 2010, New York has red flagged more than 21,000 possible cases of identity theft or fraud. However, more than a third of these cases were generated since the software upgrade in January 2016. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
