Brooklyn is Prime location for Amazon

Open Letter from Borough President Eric Adams and BCC President Andrew Hoan to Internet Giant

Following Amazon’s opening of a new retail warehouse in Staten Island, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Andrew Hoan have joined forces and written an open letter to encourage the tech giant to lay down stakes in Brooklyn.

The Seattle-based internet company was founded by Jeff Bezos in 1995. Amazon.com started as an online bookstore and later began selling CDs, DVDs and eventually moved into all merchandise areas including apparel, toys and video games. Amazon has also grown in the area of consumer electronics with its Kindle e-readers, Fire Tablets and Echo system.

Three years ago, Amazon surpassed Walmart as the most valuable retailer in the United States and this year it acquired Whole Foods Market.

So with all its continued growth, what better location for Bezos and company to consider for their second corporate headquarters than New York’s most exciting and inviting borough?

“Borough President Adams has been an integral partner in our mutual efforts to advocate for economic development throughout the borough,” said Hoan. “We look forward to continuing our ongoing effort to draw Amazon’s new headquarters to Brooklyn.”

Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Board Chair Denise Arbesu said, “Amazon’s 50,000 jobs and $5 billion in capital investment would further bolster Brooklyn’s thriving Innovation Coast, provide needed economic support in a range of related industries and make an enormous economic impact on surrounding communities. I look forward to working with Borough President Adams and our community partners to pursue this exciting opportunity.”

#BrooklynPrime is the Borough President and the BCC’s joint effort to draw Amazons new headquarters to Brooklyn.

The letter reads as follows:

Dear Amazon:

Ready, set, grow!

Since Robert Fulton steamed and Emily Roebling bridged, Brooklyn has been getting ready for you. We have no doubt that America’s fourth- (and soon-to-be third-) largest city is the best choice you can make for your second corporate headquarters.

And we’re all set! Some of America’s best universities are located in our burgeoning downtown, with more college students in Brooklyn’s Tech Triangle than in Cambridge, Massachusetts. And it doesn’t stop there; it extends from the Atlantic Ocean to Atlantic Avenue and everywhere in between.

So, when it comes to intellectual property, Brooklyn owns it!

Our quality of life is second-to-none, with world-class arts and culture, five-star foodie experiences, healthy workplace initiatives, and incredible transit access to all of the natural beauty our region has to offer.
