The Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert (JALBCA) held its annual courthouse cocktail party at the Appellate Courthouse in Brooklyn Heights on Wednesday, Sept. 13.

JALBCA is an organization that began in 1992 and is designed to mobilize members of the legal profession to act on the dangers of breast cancer. The group uses its connections to provide medical, social and legal services to those in need.

JALBCA hosts annual programs in support of services like The Family Center and ScanVan. It also funds cancer research, educational programs and family-focused initiatives.

Last Wednesday’s event was an informal gathering of members, who were encouraged to invite others from the local legal community to join them for after-work food and drinks.

Justice Reinaldo E. Rivera, associate justice, Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department, served as a de facto host for the event. Justice William C. Thompson and Justice Marsha Steinhardt also spoke briefly at the event.

JALBCA’s next event, titled “Outsmarting Cancer: The Hope of Immunotherapy,” will be held on Oct. 24 at Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett LLP in Manhattan. That event, which will be moderated by Hon. Melissa A. Crane, will feature panelists Dr. Larry Norton, Dr. Jedd D. Wolchok and Dr. Stephanie L. Goff.
