NYC opens pop-up registration centers

School for the city’s 1.1 million students kicks off today, and it looks to be a promising year. Students’ scores on the statewide proficiency tests have been going up (city kids now outperform students in other parts of the state in English and are drawing closer in math), free lunch is available to all students, and city schools are safer than ever, with last year being the safest school year on record.

Building on the successful Pre-K for All program, the city has launched 3-K for All, open to every three-year-old child, and has expanded enrichment programs like Computer Science for All and College Access for All.

For those families who have not yet registered, the Department of Education (DOE) has opened eight temporary Registration Centers across the city.

The pop-up registration sites are open from through Friday, Sept. 15 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. (A smaller number of Family Welcome Centers are open year round.)

To register your child, you’ll need to bring your child (and the child’s birth certificate or other official document with proof of age), immunization records, latest report card if available and Individualized Education Program (IEP) and/or 504 Accommodation Plan (if applicable).

Parents must demonstrate proof of residency with two documents, such as a lease, recent utility or cable bill, government letter, tax bill, rent receipt, payroll document, voter registration papers, etc. IDNYC cards are also accepted. (Families living in temporary housing are not required to bring this proof.)

Here’s how to register at each level:

Pre-K

DOE has specially trained staff at each Registration Center and Family Welcome Center to help families looking to enroll their child in free pre-K. Seats are still available, the city said on Tuesday. Families can use Pre-K Finder online (maps.nyc.gov/prek) to search for seats or call 718-935-2009. Families interested in 3-K for All seats (pre-K for 3-year-olds) may also find information at maps.nyc.gov/3k.

Elementary and Middle School

New elementary and middle school students should contact their zoned school to set up an appointment to register. Families can find their zoned schools by visiting schools.nyc.gov/SchoolSearch or calling 311. New elementary and middle school students whose address does not have a zoned school should visit a Registration Center or Family Welcome Center.

High School

New high school students who are not currently enrolled in a school must register at a Registration Center or Family Welcome Center.
