The young hero who saved a victim’s life during the horrific terrorist attack in London last year came to the U.S. Army Garrison at Fort Hamilton this week to receive a medal for his bravery.

Brooklyn native Mark Kindschuh, a Boston College student and a cadet in the school’s Reserve Officer Training Program (ROTC), was awarded the ROTC Medal for Heroism by U.S. Rep. Dan Donovan in a ceremony attended by several U.S. Army officials, including Col. Peter Sicoli, the fort’s commander.

The Medal for Heroism is the highest honor given to ROTC cadets.

“If Cadet Kindschuh represents the future of the U.S. military, our nation’s armed forces will be the greatest in history for yet another generation,” Donovan (R-C-Bay Ridge-Southwest Brooklyn-Staten Island) said in a statement. “This young man, with disregard for his own safety, saved a stranger’s life during the June 2017 terror attack in London. I’m proud to represent him and his family in Congress, and he’s fully deserving of this immense honor.”

Kindschuh was studying in London when he helped save a man’s life during the terror attack that took place in that city on June 3, 2017.

According to multiple media reports, Kindschuh was enjoying a night out at a pub with friends when he heard gunshots and saw scores of people suddenly running for cover. Within moments it was learned that a group of terrorists had run over pedestrians on the nearby London Bridge. One of the suspects was attacking pedestrians on the street with machete.

Kindschuh initially took cover under a table in the pub, but when he spotted a victim with a serious head wound bleeding on the floor, he jumped into action.

He removed his belt and wrapped it around the man’s head to try to stop the bleeding. He then ran into the street to flag down a police officer. The police officer ordered Kindschuh to save himself by going back inside the pub.

Seconds later, the terrorists were directly in front of the pub, where they were shot by police officers.

After learning of the cadet’s brave actions, Donovan contacted U.S. Army officials and recommended that he be awarded the ROTC Medal for Heroism.
