~TAKE AN EARLY AUTUMN STROLL AROUND RED HOOK’S HISTORIC WATERFRONT: History lives on the Red Hook waterfront. The post-Civil War-era warehouses there are a thing of beauty. In grim gloom or azure-skied sunshine, it will soothe your soul to see them. The other day we set out on a stroll so we could soak up the melancholy of a storm-clouded day in this gritty, beautiful neighborhood. ~BPL BRINGS BOOKS TO MIGRANT CHILDREN SEPARATED FROM THEIR PARENTS: After hearing that the Trump administration had begun separating families along the southwest border, the Brooklyn Public Library started looking for ways to help migrant children separated from their parents.Jessica Ralli reached out to some of the lawyers who represent the children and found out that the kids and teenagers often have to wait for long periods in court, resulting in stress that can leave them deeply traumatized. So Ralli and her team sent 100 bags with reading and art materials for the children.(via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~BLOOMBERG BECOMES DEMOCRAT AGAIN, LOOKS AT PRESIDENTIAL RUN: Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg is officially a Democrat again. The global media company founder said yesterday he registered as a Democrat, which would be especially significant if he decides to challenge President Donald Trump in 2020. Bloomberg said on social media he did so “because we need Democrats to provide the checks and balance our nation so badly needs.” Bloomberg did not say when he might make a decision on running for president. (AP via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~BROOKLYN MAN WINS WORLD TRANSGENDER BODYBUILDING COMPETITION: Brooklyn native and U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Wes Phills took home the Overall Winner award at Saturday evening’s annual world transgender bodybuilding competition. Phills, who performed his routine to Beyonce’s “Mine” featuring Drake, appeared with seven fellow competitors before the crowd inside an Atlanta theater on Saturday. “I’ve always been interested in bodybuilding but then there was never a nongender opportunity to do it,” Baird said. (AP via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK PENTHOUSE SALE COULD SET RECORD AT $22.75 MILLION: A penthouse now under construction at Quay Tower, one of the luxury condo high-rises under construction at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, is now in contract for more than $22 million. If the deal closes, it will be the most expensive home in the borough. The reported price of the unit is $22.75 million, according to Andrew Anderson of Douglas Elliman Development Marketing. The unit was originally intended to be two penthouses, but it is being turned into one large 7,433-square-foot home with a 1,179-square-foot terrace. (WSJ via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~RENOVATIONS OF THE ‘TRUMAN CAPOTE HOUSE’ IN BROOKLYN HEIGHTS IS COMPLETE: The restoration of 70 Willow St. in Brooklyn Heights, where Truman Capote wrote parts of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “In Cold Blood,” has evidently been completed, now that the wooden front doors are back in place. The circa-1839 residence where Capote rented a basement apartment from 1955 to 1965 has been getting a touch-up during the summer. The owners, “Grand Theft Auto” creator Dan Houser and his wifeKrystyna, received a special permit from the Landmarks Preservation Commission specifically for work on the doors. (Brownstoner via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~DOG-OWNERS BEWARE: ‘ZOMBIE’ RACCOONS ARE ON THE LOOSE IN PROSPECT PARK: There’s a new threat to Brooklyn’s furry four-legged creatures. Officials told dog-owners in the borough that an airborne virus has been confirmed in the area after two infected raccoons were found in Prospect Park. Nicknamed the “zombie virus” after its symptoms, which include a staggering, stumbling gait, this airborne disease can be deadly for pets. Dr.Harry Weatherson, a veterinarian, said that canine distemper virus can spread throughout the body within a few days, attacking the animal’s central nervous system. (CBS New York via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~AS DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN BUILDINGS RISE, SO DO RESIDENTS’ TEMPERS: Residents of Downtown Brooklyn are fuming, as plans for more and more skyline development unfold. With projects underway such as 80 Flatbush, slated to rise to 840 feet, and 9 DeKalb, set to stand at over 1,000 feet, people are complaining of noise pollution, light obstruction and cramped sidewalks. “With all the construction, the sidewalks are a mess,” Nicole Collins said. Collins, who moved to the neighborhood from Texas, is now unable to see the view of Manhattan that initially drew her to the neighborhood. (Daily News via Brooklyn Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: The vision of “One LIU” will not include the Blackbirds’ men’s soccer team, even though it is in the middle of a brilliant campaign. With the Brooklyn and LIU-Post campuses combining their athletic programs at the start of the 2019 academic year, the Blackbirds, one of the more successful teams on the local soccer scene over the past several years, will no longer be playing at LIU Field here in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn. Instead, the two squads will somehow be combined into a single Division I program in Brookville, N.Y., where the LIU-Post Pioneers have emerged as a Division II powerhouse. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
