Work to begin on Clark Street subway elevators — but when?

For many years, the elevators at the 2 and 3 trains’ Clark Street subway station have been breaking down. 

In the most recent incident, one of the elevators malfunctioned and left passengers trapped inside for an hour earlier this month. Talia Kovacs, one of those passengers, told Gothamist that despite straphangers’ constant tweets and texts during that time, there was no response from the MTA.

Shortly after the incident, Andre Berman from the MTA press office told Gothamist that “all of the elevators at Clark Street are set to be replaced under the current capital program.”

Two weeks later, the MTA elaborated, saying that New York City Transit (the division of the MTA dealing with city subways and buses) has a contract to replace the elevators, and the design work should be finished next month.

However, said the transit agency, the actual work will be extensive and “the timeline for completion of the work will be set once the design phase is completed.”

Clark Street is one of the deepest stations underground in the New York City subway station, and the stairway is closed except during emergencies. The last time the elevators were replaced in the almost 100-year-old station was in 1995, according to Gothamist.

Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams has urged the MTA to act quickly, saying that “We’ve heard from constituents that the elevators at Clark Street seem to be in a constant state of breaking down and in need of replacement.”
