Village Cafe, the Azerbaijani restaurant on Coney Island Avenue in Midwood, is the place to go for an extensive menu and a full stomach, according to The New York Times’ food critics. The cafe brings expansive dishes that seem “intended to feed an actual village” to varnished picnic-style tables.

The menu includes qutabs, the delicate Azerbaijani flatbread; crimped dumplings filled with chicken or lamb, served boiled or fried; liver cooked in all different styles; and a noodle dish called “guru hingal,” thin, wide sheets of pasta layered under an onion and lamb sauce.

Pete Wells, the critic for the Times who has ensured Village Cafe a spot on the NYT Critic’s Pick list, called each visit “a test of [his] appetite’s limits,” and recommends a cup of tea or two to speed your recovery from the meal.

Village Cafe is located at 1968 Coney Island Avenue.
