Roberta’s New York Pizza, a well-known restaurant at 261 Moore St. in Bushwick, has now opened a branch in Culver City, a small California city that is mainly within the boundaries of Los Angeles.

Roberta’s first opened in 2008, a time when Bushwick was “the boonies,” according to Robb Report, a luxury lifestyle website. At the same time, the city’s economy was reeling from the real estate crash.

Thus, many of Roberta’s signature characteristics began as moves to save money, chef and co-founder Carlo Mirarchi told Robb Report.

For example, the restaurant’s communal seating “happened because we couldn’t afford chairs and we were worried about having that many tables,” Mirarchi said.

Eventually, Roberta’s became popular and well-regarded, especially after it was reviewed by The New York Times. Michelin has awarded it two stars, Robb Report said.
