THE LEDE: Happy Friday! Brooklynites get half price taxi fares to Manhattan, we recommend the best pumpkin soups in the borough, and the Atlantic Yards serves as a warning for Amazon’s arrival. Plus, the GoldenGounardes vote count is delayed, landlords are allowing their buildings to be used as brothels, and a Brooklyn landlord is charged with helping a prostitution ring. Finally, a photographer reveals what Brooklyn looked like in the ’70s and ’80s, we share the 10 best pizza slices in the city, and the Nets lose a third game in a row.

~FOR AMAZON HQ2 DEAL, ATLANTIC YARDS SERVES AS A WARNING:The plan for a new Amazon complex in Long Island City, Queens, arrived this week with huge fanfare — at least 25,000 jobs! (over ten years). But we must remember that, despite gauzy estimates about public benefits, nothing is certain. So promises of jobs and tax revenue deserve deep scrutiny and continued oversight. Those are lessons from the Atlantic Yards plan that gave us Barclays Center in Brooklyn, which — though less an office development than arena-plus-housing one — went through the same process touted for Amazon by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio(via Brooklyn Eagle)

~HERE ARE THE 6 BEST PUMPKIN SOUPS IN BROOKLYN: With Halloween behind us and Thanksgiving just around the corner, pumpkin season is in full swing. Styling stoops, infiltrating coffee shops, and stuffing pies and sweets alike, the orange veggie is the ideal addition to any fall table. If you love the idea of celebrating seasonal shifts through culinary action, but do not have the sweet tooth required to enjoy extreme amounts of pumpkin pastries, there is hope. The savory and sweet crossover soup of the season is being featured in more and more restaurants in Brooklyn, and we took the liberty of testing some of them. Here are the top six we tasted(via Brooklyn Eagle)

~AFTER 8TH SUICIDE OF NYC CABBIE, HALF PRICE TAXI FARES TO MANHATTAN LAUNCHED: On Wednesday, the New York City Medical Examiner determined that a Queens cab driver died by hanging, making him the eighth driver to die by suicide this year. As part of Taxi and Limousine Commission’s effort to help traditional cabbies compete with companies like Uber and Lyft, a new deal that will benefit Brooklyn and Queens riders was launched on Thursday. Yellow cab riders will now be able to pay just half fare to ride into Manhattan during rush hours by using Waave, an app approved by TLC. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~ABSENTEE VOTE COUNT POSTPONED IN GOLDEN-GOUNARDES RACE:More than a week after Election Day, the contest between Republican state Sen. Marty Golden and Democratic challenger Andrew Gounardes was still not close to being certified by the Board of Elections. On Thursday, it was learned that the Board of Elections’ official count of absentee ballots that had been scheduled to take place that day was being postponed until Friday. Gounardes, a lawyer, is the apparent winner of the race, having earned 50.9 percent of the vote total (31,168 votes) to Golden’s 49.1 percent (30,039 votes) in the 22nd Senate District. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~PROSTITUTION RINGS INCREASINGLY ENLIST LANDLORDS TO PROVIDE APARTMENTS FOR USE AS BROTHELS: With the rise of gentrification throughout the city, promoters of prostitution have increasingly turned to landlords as accomplices. For a fee, the landlords provide apartments where prostitutes ply their trade. The New York Times provided the example of a four-story building in Park Slope, where strange men constantly visited two apartments where neighbors believed prostitutes entered. (NYT via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BROOKLYN LANDLORD-PIMP CHARGED WITH HELPING PROSTITUTION RING OPERATE IN HIS BUILDINGS: Isaac Schwartz, who reportedly owns 48 apartment buildings stretching from Park Slope toFlatbush, was arrested in October and charged with helping a prostitution ring to operate in four of his buildings. The buildings are at 2007 Foster Ave., Flatbush; 483 Fourth Ave., Park Slope; 880 Gates Ave., Bed-Stuy; and 203 Onderdonk Ave., Ridgewood, Queens. In addition to his alleged activities, to which he has pleaded not guilty, Schwartz regularly appeared on various “worst landlord” lists. (The Real Deal via Brooklyn Eagle)

~PHOTOGRAPHER SHOWS THAT BROOKLYN LIFE WASN’T ONLY DRUGS, GANGS AND FIRES IN ’70S, ’80S: BPL is currently hosting a retrospective of vintage Brooklyn photographs taken by Larry Racioppo. More of Racioppo’s photos, from the years 1971 to 1983, are collected in his recent book “Brooklyn Before.” Racioppo, who lived in Park Slope and Sunset Parkduring those years, presents a wide panorama of Brooklyn life, ranging from local churches to Prospect Park and Coney Island. The book proves that the image many outsiders have of those years – that the city’s life was dominated by gang fights, robberies, drugs, fires and abandoned buildings – is quite exaggerated. (Gothamist via Brooklyn Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: The Nets looked more like a team getting over an emotional hangover than one ready to compete in an NBA game Wednesday night at Barclays Center. Playing its first game without injured starting shooting guard Caris LeVert, Brooklyn struggled on both ends of the floor en route to its third straight loss, an ugly 120-107 defeat to the visiting Miami Heat. Two nights earlier in Minnesota, the Nets (6-9) watched in horror as LeVert, their leading scorer and top player thus far this season, fell to the floor in agony with what originally appeared to be a season-ending leg injury. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
