Residents of Brooklyn will be having a ball at the newest addition to the waterfront called Socceroof, an eye-popping 70,000 square foot indoor soccer facility that opened Nov. 1.

The Sunset Park-based location on 53rd Street and the waterfront is equipped with 10 different soccer fields, hosting five-on-five or even seven-on-seven competitions. Socceroof boasts changing rooms, a high-end sports bar, multiple big-screen TVs and a scenic roof-top lounge with an unobstructed view of waterfront views of Manhattan. The facility is being touted as “a perfect place to book night-time parties, music/ corporate events or even baby/wedding showers.”

Open seven days a week in the Whale Building, the former torpedo assembly factory, the facility has soccer-themes throughout to reinforce its commitment to making the sport fun. In February of 1988, a massive five-alarm fire destroyed much of the interior of the building that served as a mixed-use factory and a paint processing facility. The building has since experienced a renaissance, with new office spaces and now this large soccer and recreational facility,

The entrance boasts a multi-team spread of several international players, and a colorful wall filled with soccer and city. The striking fields are even named after Brooklyn neighborhoods stressing community uniqueness.

For fitness-minded people and those on the go, fields rentals, club and league registration and pick-up game sign ups can be done through a mobile app. Subways are nearby and ferry services dock on 58th Street. On-site parking available is available, and the facility uses shuttle buses.

The facility was christened on Thursday night by its three founders, Jerome Neary, Jean-David Tartour and Jonathan Lupinelli. Tartour was a founder of the LE FIBE soccer community, which now has 30 centers across Europe.

Jonathan Lupinelli, general manager and founder, said, “We are so proud to be part of this community, providing an exciting, fresh place for all to enjoy. Soccer is the sport for everyone. There is no better environment to see smiling, happy faces than on a soccer pitch.”

Socceroof is the first facility to focus 100 percent on soccer in New York City, making it a world-class venue for all demographics to explore. As the sport grows in U.S., the custom artificial turf is expected to attract thousands to the location and increase interest in soccer.
