Spike Lee behind BAM Park accidental opening

After releasing the news that BAM Park in Fort Greene reopened recently, the truth behind the gate remaining unlocked was uncovered when the Housing Preservation and Development emailed the Brooklyn Eagle to dismiss the claim.

“HPD was contacted by a film crew for use of the site,” said Juliet Pierre-Antoine, press secretary for the agency. “HPD granted permission but has since learned that the site was not properly secured after each filming session.”

The mishap was due to legendary Brooklyn film director Spike Lee, who requested to film in the location for the upcoming second season of the Netflix series “She’s Gotta Have It.” The crew simply forgot to lock the gate when they left.

The show is produced by Lee and based on his 1986 film of the same namesake. The crew was shooting in the Fort Greene and Clinton Hill area for weeks and touched up the park for some of their filming. Unfortunately, they led the public to believe the park had reopened for the first time since 2005, when they haphazardly left the gates unlocked after completing their shoot.

The date for the real opening is still unknown. For those residents who were already looking forward to relaxing in the spruced up park, plans to permanently improve and reopen the park should begin before the end of this year.  

Although the film crew was in a safe enough environment to record their shots, the housing group still considers the site unsecure and remains concerned for the safety of community residents, keeping them out until the rehabilitation work is completed.
