The NYPD plans to keep the enhanced safety measures that were implemented last year to combat violence at the annual J’Ouvert celebration on the morning of the annual West Indian Day Carnival in Crown Heights. In 2015, a lawyer for the state was fatally shot when he walked near a gang dispute, and the following year two more people were killed, according to Gothamist. There will be more checkpoints so people won’t have to wait as long to take part in the festivities. Pastor Gilford Monrose of the Mt. Zion Church of God in East Flatbush told Gothamist that he, police officers and Brooklyn district attorney have been talking to individual gang members and their parents in an effort to prevent violence. NYPD Det. Roxanne Joseph also advised parents to keep an eye on their youngsters who are going to J’Ouvert. “So if little Johnny is saying he’s leaving at 1 a.m. to go to J’Ouvert, he is not. J’Ouvert starts at 6,” she said. “When your loved one is leaving to go to J’Ouvert, what’s in that knapsack? What is he or she carrying?”
