Over 30 cities are already using Bird, the dockless, electric, rideshare scooter system that has a new vision for urban transportation. New York City, its streets already flooded with a slew of different transportation options, has resisted jumping on board, until now — maybe.

Thursday morning, Bird sponsored a demonstration in Bedford-Stuyvesant after Councilmember Rafael Espinal (D-37) co-authored an op-ed in the Daily News calling for the birds to land in his borough.

Councilmember Robert Cornegy (D-36) attended the demonstration, excited by the opportunities the affordable scooters (rides start at $1 and cost 15 cents to 20 cents per minute) could offer the residents in his district.

“Communities of color aren’t often at the vanguard of new technology,” Cornegy told Bklyner. “There are intelligent and capable people in this community that don’t want to be skipped by technology.”

The scooters are currently illegal in New York, the result of a 2004 law that sought to keep Segways off city streets, but legislation to bring Bird to New York has been proposed in the City Council.
