On Saturday, Dec. 15, I will be joining Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, Councilman Erik Martin Dilan, Assemblyman Rafael Espinal, Assemblyman William Boyland Jr., and State Senators John Sampson, Velmanette Montgomery and Martin Malave Dilan at two local churches that are sponsoring Brooklyn’s Gun Buy Back program.

Rev. Reginald Bachus of Mt. Ollie Baptist Church and Bishop David Benke of St. Peters Lutheran Church will join us with hosting this event at their churches. The Gun Buy Back sites will operate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Mt. Ollie Baptist Church is located at 1698 St. Marks Ave.,, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and St. Peters Lutheran Church is located at 105 Highland Place, Cypress Hills.

During the Gun Buy Back, individuals who own guns are able to trade each of them in for a $200 bank card. BB or air guns, as well as rifles and shotguns, can be redeemed for $20 each. There is no limit to the number of guns participants can surrender, but they will be paid for at most three of them. All of the transactions are anonymous.

The guns must be placed in a plastic or paper bag or a box. Also, if transporting the gun by car, the gun must be transported in the trunk of the automobile.

After the gun is screened by officers and determined to be operable, you will be issued a bankcard for $200. Active or retired law enforcement officers and licensed gun dealers are not eligible to participate in the program.

For additional information, you can call Mt. Ollie Baptist Church at (718) 385-3761, St. Peters Lutheran Church at (718) 647-1014, or 311 and ask for information regarding the Brooklyn Gun Buy Back Program to Reduce Violent Crime.
