The Huffington Post reports that Borough President Marty Markowitz is pushing the idea of opening gambling casinos in Coney Island. As the Eagle previously reported, Markowitz first made the suggestion in response to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s plans to legalize casino gambling in the state. The Huffington Post says that the recently opened “racino” (mini-casino featuring video slot machines and electronic table games) at Aqueduct Racetrack has generated $90 million in two months. Still, many people are leery of full-fledged casino gambling because of the social ills that could ensue.
