The powerhouse chess team at I.S. 318 Eugenia Maria de Hostos in Williamsburg – a middle school with students in grades 6 to 8 — won the National High School Championships this past Sunday.

The renowned middle school team beat the best high school chess players in the country, including students at Stuyvesant High School. The I.S. 318 team is the subject of the chess documentary, “Brooklyn Castle.”

I.S. 318 has won at least 26 national chess titles — more than any other junior high in the country. I.S. 318 is a Title I school.

“I want to congratulate the chess team at I.S. 318 Eugenia Maria de Hostos in Williamsburg for winning the National High School Chess Championships, said New York City School Chancellor Dennis Walcott. “As the first-ever middle school team to win this tournament, we should all be proud of these students and teachers for their historic win.”

I.S. 318’s budget has been cut by more than $1 million this year, and the chess team’s funding and been cut every year for the past several years. The team welcomes contributions. (See www.brooklyncastle.com)
