Golden leads Lunar New Year celebration

Hosts Annual Event Celebrating the Year of the Rooster

State Sen. Marty Golden, together with the Chinese American Community Partnership Inc. (CACPI), hosted his annual Lunar New Year celebration on Sunday, Feb. 12, at New Utrecht High School.

Don Lee, chairman of the Homecrest Community Center, welcomed guests and served as M.C. Also attending the event were Wilson Yau of the CACPI, Ms. Joanne, assistant principal of P.S. 105 Alice Lee, assistant principal of P.S. 105 and John Quaglione, Golden’s deputy chief of staff.

Golden greeted the crowd with “Gong Hei Fat Choy,” which means Happy New Year in Chinese.

“I wish the best for the entire community in the happy and prosperous year of the Rooster, also the 4715th Lunar New Year. Rooster is a symbol of civility, military, bravery, kindness and reliability. I wish in the year ahead that there will be mutual sharing and love in the community,” he said.

The celebration featured cultural presentations including the Lion Dance, Kung Fu and Tai Chi Martial Arts, a fashion Show, Chinese opera, singing and dancing from local public and academy schools and a civic and community information booth. Performances featured an array of talent, including professional entertainers.

“As a state senator in my eighth term, I have been able to champion the causes that make a better community for all of us, and a better and safer city and state,” Golden stated.

Golden went on to say that he hoped the year ahead would be prosperous and bring an economic revival to the community.

“The Asian community in Brooklyn has grown rapidly during the last two decades, and there is currently a population of 300,000 in my district of which 25 percent are Chinese,” he said. “It is important that we cater to the cultural needs of those who live within our community.

“I have worked diligently to afford our aging population the very best quality of life. I continue to work on legislation that will reduce the price of prescription drugs. I have brought about a uniform system of monitoring for assisted living facilities to protect all residents.”

The celebration had over twenty sponsors, including local businesses and individual sponsors. Admission was free and open to the public. All guests received gift bags and a special golden coin to help celebrate the Year of the Rooster.

Golden thanked everyone for attending and promised to continue supporting, “our community, our programs, our residents.”
