The delivery of health care in Southwest Brooklyn is undergoing a major change. On Wednesday, officials at two hospitals, Maimonides Medical Center in Borough Park and New York Community Hospital in Midwood, announced that they had signed an agreement to have their two institutions work together.

The new partnership, called a clinical collaboration, will foster cooperation between medical professionals from the two hospitals and will allow additional medical and surgical services to become available to patients, officials said.

Maimonides Medical Center, an affiliate of Northwell Health, is a 711-bed, nonprofit hospital at 4802 10th Ave. in Borough Park. The hospital also operates a Cancer Center at 6300 Eighth Ave. in Bay Ridge. Maimonides, which was founded in 1911, serves as an independent teaching and research institution and is a clinical training site for the State University of New York Downstate College of Medicine.

New York Community Hospital was founded in 1929 and is known for its use of advanced technology, and ongoing support of the health of local residents, according to officials. The 134-bed hospital is located at 2525 Kings Highway.

Officials at both health care institutions praised the new agreement.

“This clinical collaboration agreement brings value to both of our institutions,” Maimonides President and CEO Kenneth Gibbs said in a statement. “And it will strengthen the latest trend, Brooklyn residents who seek top-level care are staying right here in Brooklyn. Both hospitals serve patients from a broad array of cultures. And that shared experience has helped our discussions to evolve naturally, with our teams blending easily.”

Barry Stern, president and CEO of New York Community Hospital, was equally enthusiastic.

“Our physicians and our leadership are delighted to be partnering with Maimonides. Our missions are aligned perfectly. We believe in delivering the highest quality care in a patient-centered setting,” he stated.

Stern characterized the work between the two hospitals so far as “seamless,” and said “there’s a real air of camaraderie as our staff members share ideas and work together to improve and grow our services.”

The next step in the clinical collaboration between Maimonides Medical Center and New York Community Hospital will involve exploring ways the two hospitals can integrate some of their programs, according to officials.
