DA’s office hosts Black History Month bash at St. Francis College

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez filled the auditorium at St. Francis College on Tuesday for a Black History Month celebration that featured Ted Shaw, President of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Legal Defense and Educational Fund.

L. Joy Williams, president of the Brooklyn NAACP, served as the master of ceremonies, the Rev. Robert M. Waterman, of the Antioch Baptist Church read the invocation and the Mount Ararat Baptist Church Choir sang the black national anthem among its musical performances. Black Girl Magic performed a dance.

Awards were given out to local community members. Jocelyn B. Mann, director of local and global outreach for the Emmanuel Baptist Church, received the Community Outreach Award; NYPD Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison was given the Law Enforcement Award; and Edna Wells Handy, acting COO for the NYCHA, got the Community Legal Award.

The evening event was wrapped up with closing remarks by Gonzalez and Shaw, who served as the keynote speaker, and Chris Owens, director of re-entry programs for the Brooklyn DA’s Office provided a final musical performance.
