City turning thousands of old parking meters into bike racks
The Department of Transportation is converting thosands of old parking meters poles into bike racks. According to DOT, the converted racks feature a circular attachment bolted onto the original parking meter posts left over after their installation of muni meters.
Although the nearly $2 million pricetag might seem like a lot, officials say that using existing infrastructure saves money because they don’t have to rip out the poles, according to the New York Post.
The new meter rack’s design is based on a “Hoop” rack designed by Ian Mahaffy and Maarten De Greeve, which was selected as the winner of a DOT and Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum-sponsored competition in 2008.
