Heartening Reminders
Dr. Samuel Johnson, famous British writer and scholar who died in 1789 at the age of 75, is credited with the maxim, “Men need not be told so much as reminded…” Sometime it seems the job of this column is to remind fellow Brooklynites about the extraordinary and enlightened volunteer work done by our neighbors. Brooklyn Kindergarten Society was founded about a century after Dr. Johnson died, and it continues to do what the devout scholar might have called “God’s work…” The extraordinary people shown in the photo above include (left to right) JIM MATISON, Executive Director, and board members CYNTHIA CUMMINGS, MAUDE ANDREW, BILL YATES, GLORIA LANZA-BAJO, MARY CROWLEY, MELINDA KARP, HARRY SHULMAN and MARRY STANTON …..Where they stand, and the reason we’re publishing their photo, can be explained by the following article, published Wednesday in our ‘Mother publication’ , theBrooklyn Daily Eagle. It captures some of the essence of the importance of BKS:
