NYC bids Brooklyn’s Barclays for 2016 Democratic National Convention
The news came to light on Friday that Mayor Bill de Blasio has submitted a bid for New York City to host the 2016 Democratic National Convention, with Brooklyn’s Barclay’s Center as the principal venue.
In a letter to Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz dated June 5, Mayor de Blasio wrote, “We are eager to offer Brooklyn’s Barclay’s Center as the principal venue. This spectacular arena in one of the most dynamic and resurgent neighborhoods in our city is located atop nine subway lines and a stop of the Long Island Railroad. From the Brooklyn Museum and Brooklyn Academy of Music closest to the Barclays Center to destinations throughout the five boroughs . . . these are just a few examples of the venues that can make compelling settings for the conventions many events.”
The Mayor spoke of the city’s success in hosting previous world-class events and the talent and professionalism of city personnel, and pointed out that New York City is “the safest big city in the country and the home of the nation’s most extensive public transit system and largest bicycle-share program.”
