Brooklyn principal arrested on drug charges
A Brooklyn elementary school principal has been arrested on charges of trying to smuggle drugs into a maximum-security upstate prison. Sadie Silver, principal at P.S. 28 Warren Prep Academy, allegedly attempted to smuggle heroin and prescription drugs into Coxsackie Correctional Facility. Police said that Silver, along with Michael Acosta and an unidentified 10-year-old child, attempted to enter the 1,000-inmate male prison with significant amounts of contraband.
Silver, 40, had been recognized as star educator and touted for raising the math and reading test scores of children at the Bushwick elementary school. Prior to Silver’s appointment to the principal post, only 28 percent of P.S. 28 fourth graders were reading at a grade level.
In 2012, thanks in part to Silver’s efforts, that number increased to 54 percent.
