Kaye Houlihan, the principal of Fort Hamilton High School in Bay Ridge, recently welcomed to her school the principal of a Bensonhurst intermediate school whose eighth graders will be freshmen at Fort Hamilton in September.

Houihan and Dominick D’Angelo, the principal of David A. Boody Intermediate School (I.S. 228), discussed how their two schools could work closely together to ensure a smooth transition for students leaving intermediate school and entering high school, according to officials at Fort Hamilton.

I.S. 228, located at 228 Avenue S, sends many of its graduating eighth graders to Fort Hamilton High School at 8301 Shore Road.

The two principals were joined in their discussions by Betty Tang, the guidance counselor at I.S. 228 and Thomas Oberle, assistant principal of arts and business at Fort Hamilton.

Houlihan and D’Angelo discovered that their two schools had much in common, including a strong focus on arts education.

D’Angelo and Tang were given a tour of Fort Hamilton and visited several classes, including Fort Hamilton’s Marching Regiment, the Joffrey Ballet Dance Academy, the Symphonic Orchestra and the Symphonic Band.

D’Angelo also got to conduct the Symphonic Band. “Mr. D. can conduct Fort’s band anytime,” Oberle said. “Ms. Houlihan and Mr. D’Angelo are both strong advocates for arts instruction.”

The visit was facilitated by Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña, who had visited the schools and observed the commitment to arts instruction in both places, according to Fort Hamilton officials.
